About

Darren M. McDonald is Professor of Human Resource Management in the Department of Business Studies & Informatics, Faculty of Business Administration, Daito Bunka University in Tokyo. His current research focuses on diversity management in Japan with a specific interest in the experience, work and role of the diversity manager. His research methodology is qualitative, applying 'constructivist' grounded theory methods. Mr McDonald received his Bachelor of Arts in Modern Asian Studies at Griffith University, Australia and a Master's in Business Studies at Daito Bunka University in Tokyo. Presently he is pursuing a PhD in the School of East Asian Studies and the School of Management at The University of Sheffield in the UK based on his research into the diversity manager in Japan. He is also a scholar of modern Japanese philosophy and is applying this knowledge to field work in Human Resource Management. Mr. McDonald is adviser to a leading Japanese diversity management consultancy company where he is expanding qualitative approaches towards action research in order to develop approaches and training suitable for companies in Japan. Working in academia and the real world of business is enabling Mr. Donald to produce research that reflects actual issues facing companies and to translate this research into sets of tools to improve the working lives of employees in Japan.
